Your support makes WinHacks possible. This guide is intended to help you access the event.
If you have any questions or concerns that are not addressed here, please reach out to support@winhacks.ca
Participating in WinHacks is simple. Some basic equipment is required to give you full access to the event:
High speed internet
Headphones & a microphone
Optionally, a webcam
Here we'll provide some information about the event.
Depending on how you plan to interact with the event, you may need to understand different platforms. Here is a summary of roles and what they need to know:
Speakers should be familiar with how to use Streamlabs Melon
Recruiters and company representatives should be familiar with Discord
Judges should be familiar with Discord and have an idea of how Judging works
Event staff should be familiar with all the platforms listed below
Here is a brief summary of the platforms we'll be using for WinHacks 2022:
Discord is a group voice and text chat platform which allows for easy organization of conversation. Our Discord server will be the main venue for the event.
Twitch.tv is a live-streaming platform. It'll be used for publicly broadcasting sections of the event.
Streamlabs Melon interfaces will Twitch.tv to streamline the broadcasting process.
Zoom is a video conferencing platform. We'll use it to host hacker only workshops and networking sessions.
DevPost is where MLH hackathons host challenges, and where hackers can post demo videos. It'll be used to submit and judge challenge submissions.
You should receive an email that explains your role and which parts of this guide to reference. If at any point you need further assistance, you may reply to that email or reach out to support@winhacks.ca for more help.
Discord has a lot of functionality, and for WinHacks we'll take advantage of most of it. Here we'll list the most important information for you to get started, and some resources to learn more if you need to.
Head to discord.winhacks.ca, then sign into your account or make a new account, as prompted:
Click "Continue to Discord"
If you're new to discord, click "register" and follow the instructions
If you are prompted for an invite link or invite code enter xUV9yBqjH4
At the bottom of your screen, the server will ask you to agree to the rules; do this to gain access
Afterward, you should verify your email address to confirm your role on the server and gain access to exclusive areas
Discord allows you to be part of different "servers" which contain different chat rooms
You can click on different chat rooms and type into them to communicate with other server members
Some channels will be off limits to type in based on your role (i.e. the Welcome channel)
More channels will become available as your role changes
In addition to text channels, you can join voice channels where you can talk to other members using a microphone
You can alert specific users similarly to how you would do so on Twitter by using the "@" symbol followed by their name or role (i.e. @Aislyn or @Lead)
When you @ mention someone, you'll see that discord will suggest different options above the chat box - you can click on the one you want
You can react to different posts using emojis
When in a voice channel you can mute yourself so that other participants can't hear you (bottom left hand side of your screen)
Discord has very good apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. You can use any of those if you like, but the browser version will work just fine.
This tool will give you easy access to our live public broadcast of the event. Speakers will be given a special, private link to the backstage via email. You should not share this link with anyone.
For maximum effectiveness, you should join the broadcast on a desktop or laptop computer using the latest version of either Google Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
Follow the provided link
Give Streamlabs Melon permission to access your camera and microphone - you should be prompted for this
Enter the name you would like displayed when prompted
You'll remain in the backstage area until an organizer brings you live - you will not interrupt the live broadcast by joining the backstage area. We'll let you know, via the chat on the right hand side, when you'll be going live.
In the middle, you'll see what's currently live
On the right hand side you'll see a private chat where you can communicate with the organizers
At the bottom you'll see your own camera and microphone activity and any screen you're sharing
You can share your screen using the buttons along the bottom - feel free to test this out while waiting to go live
On Sunday, March 27th at 11:00 AM [EST], submissions will officially close for hackers and the judging period will begin. Judges will be joining a zoom call, starting at 11:15 AM, where judging will take place.
Each judge will be responsible for judging submissions for their respective challenge.
If multiple judges are collaborating on a challenge, submissions should be divided evenly between them. For example, if there are 10 submissions and 2 judges, each should review 5 submissions.
Should there be too many submissions for the judge(s) of a particular challenge to review in a reasonable time frame, additional judges will be assigned from the organizing committee.
A Google Spreadsheet will be shared with each judge, where submissions will be separated into sub-sheets labeled for their respective challenges. Each sheet will contain a list of submissions, including links to the projects on DevPost.
Judges can click on the link to view the full submission including the demo video and any additional files or documents uploaded by the hackers.
Submissions should be judged based on the following criteria:
Does it follow the instructions laid out in the challenge description?
Is the design / interface easy to use and understand? Is it aesthetically pleasing?
How creative is their idea? Is it innovative or boundary pushing in some way?
Once projects have been evaluated, each individual judge should identify the best submission from those assigned to them. This is done by highlighting the winning submission in the spreadsheet blue.
If multiple judges are working on the same challenge, each judge should review all of the highlighted challenges. After review, the group should discuss which of the identified projects should be selected as the winner.
For challenges with multiple prizes, submissions should be identified with the following colour scheme:
First place: Blue
Second place: Orange
Third place: Red
Challenges with multiple judges should be assigned second and third from the pool of "best projects" identified by the group.
Once judging is completed and winners have been selected, the lead judge will preform one final review. Winning submissions will then be announced on DevPost and on the WinHacks Discord server.
